Nathan Drake now owns my soul

Posted: February 23, 2012 in Uncharted, Video Games

So I’m one of the idiots people who bought the Playstation Vita on launch; I actually got what I feel was a pretty good deal on it to be honest. Normally the UK gets shafted with this kind of thing by certain companies Nintendo thinking that they can simply chance a $ to a £ and knock about twenty quid off. I won’t say how much it did cost me, but I got the Wi-Fi version which came bundled with Uncharted: Golden Abyss and an 8gb memory card.

The system itself feels like I got value for money. It is a teeny tiny bit too big for my small hands so I daresay I will probably go for the inevitable smaller version when Sony bring that out but it won’t be as painful on my wallet as most game stores here in the UK let you trade in your older model and give you a sizable amount off the old one or I can hand it in and get cash for it at CEX – a store that offers cash for your gadgets without feeling like a seedy pawn shop.

Vita came with a dead battery which I pretty much expected, but unlike the PSP it was happy to work for me as long as I hooked it up to the mains. The screen is huge and is absolutely gorgeous, the menus are extremely easy to use and within minutes I was exploring what the Vita has to offer me.

Then I made my first mistake. You see Vita will only allow one PSN account to be registered to it – to combat priacy I suppose but apparently I signed up a second PSN account at some point… and I assigned the wrong one to my Vita. This wouldn’t have been a problem since you can format the system and start again but I also got points on my reward card for preordering Vita, and used those points to buy a free PSN card… that I attached to the wrong account. D’OH!

Now; as for Uncharted itself. This wasn’t a game developed by Naughty Dog and it shows in some ways. I don’t actually find the touch screen stuff all that obtrusive which is good but – and this may just be me trying to find a flaw with a franchise that I love so so much – I don’t like that all the climbable surfaces shine. Uncharted has never been a free roaming game but this just makes it even more linear than it already is.

Dante is also getting on my nerves and this is a first – I have loved every single Uncharted character up until this point, even the main villain in Uncharted 2 but I really, really hope that I get to shoot Dante in the face. Now I live in England so I could be wrong but he strikes me as a very stereotypical, mouthy Italian-American and… yeah I want to shoot him in the face. He isn’t spoiling the game for me or anything like that, but he is kind of annoying. Maybe I’m just bummed because I’m on chapter 3 and haven’t seen Sully yet XD

I also have to mention the aiming. It is very, very twitchy and not like Uncharted at all. I’m coping but it’s a lot tougher than the PS3 games (although I’m getting way more head shots, I don’t understand how this is possible, maybe the game feels sorry for me XD).

But all those points are but minor niggles in what is a stunningly beautiful game. The character banter is still there, Nate is still in character (and still voiced by the lovely Nolan North) and as always, the characters just make it feel alive… even Dante XD

I think I’ve rambled enough, but I’ll leave you with this piece of eye-candy taken with the handy Vita screencapping ability which I will subsequently abuse the hell out of now I know it’s there.

VGA – Results

Posted: December 11, 2011 in Video Games

I really wish that WordPress would stop logging me out. It’s getting as bad as the EA forum.

I’ve finally gone and checked out the video game awards results and I must say that there were a few surprises. Skyrim definately deserved GOTY no question; I have been sucked into the world of Elder Scrolls myself and the only reason why I have stopped playing is because I was a fool and bought the PS3 version and I’m tired of losing progress on my Dark Elf because the game decides to randomly freeze on a loading screen or while I’m roaming around the wilderness… the stuttering framerate isn’t helping. I admit I really wish I had done research before buying it as it looks like I went for the buggiest version, I don’t really use my 360 that much but I’m toying with trading in the PS3 version for the PC version instead since fan patches will be able to release most of the game’s problems.

It sounds mental I know. I’ve put a lot of hours into the game and my character is level 18 with all the glass armour but I’ve been mostly dicking around and haven’t even begun the main campaign yet, so there’s not really a big loss there.

I was surprised that Batman: Arkham City won the top 360 title – how can a game that’s available on both PS3 and 360 take the top title? Then I remembered that there hasn’t really been many exclusive games for the 360. As for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception taking the top PS3 spot… well I am a huge Uncharted fan so I was very pleased with that result but I do think that it should have also won Best Action / Adventure over Arkham City. While the latter does look like a good game that I intend to pick up when it’s cheaper it also seems to get rather repetitive very quickly from looking at the Lets Plays and while I’m sure that there are people that would argue Uncharted also becomes repetitive it has the story and character development to support it IMO.

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword winning for the Wii was such an ass pull. The game has barely been out here in the UK and I don’t think America has had it all that long either but then again you have to ask what other games of note have come out on the Wii? Nothing. So in that respect it doesn’t surprise me that it won best game for Wii and Best Motion Game, but I do think it was an ass pull.

As was Mario winning for the 3DS. I mean seriously? That’s another game that’s barely been out at all but Nintendo’s lacklustre releases this year have probably resulted in that.

I’m glad Portal 2 picked up the Best PC Game and while I’m slightly surprised that Nolan North didn’t take the win for Best Male Role for Nathan Drake I’m glad that Stephen Merchant got it for Wheatley because that was a fantastic performance and made me really warm to that moronic little ball 😀

OMG! I’ve had an e-mail from GAME informing me that Uncharted 3 has been shipped. I did get a warning e-mail from them saying something along these lines might happen due to the volume of orders but… OMG if I get Uncharted 3 tomorrow you will hear my fangirly screams on the other side of the damn world!

Non-Sims Related Crap

While I have never exactly been a regular poster I did usually put up pictures of what I was doing in my game etc. That has fallen by the wayside somewhat lately and I have a very good reason for it: I am now the owner of a blue 3DS.

Originally I was very against the device. It was retailing at £220 which I felt was a bloody rip off for what was basically a DS with a few extra features thrown in – nevermind that I doubted I would be able to get the 3D to work since I wear glasses and have never had much luck with the technology when it has been revived in the past so I felt very resentful of dropping so much money on something that I wouldn’t be able to use all the features of (and for some reason none of the stores near me have a demo one up).

Besides; Nintendo unashamedly admitted to marking up the price of the 3DS beyond what it was worth because they knew people would pay for it. Right. Needless to say I think the 3DS has been doing rather badly here in the UK because all the game stores are discounting it like crazy. Maybe it’s because the actual £220 asking price is the same price as a Wi-Fi edition of the PSP Vita which can do a damn lot more than the 3DS or maybe it’s just because people are getting sick of seeing new DSs every couple of months… Nintendo are turning into Apple! (or are Apple turning into Nintendo since Nintendo started pulling this crap towards the end of the GBA’s life… before Apple was ‘cool’ again).

I did end up getting one in the end. Taking advantage of a Gamestation promotion that gave me double the exchange price for LA Noire (man that game pissed me off) combined with Zelda: Ocarina of Time & a 3DS for £180 (the 3DS on it’s own was £149 – yet for some reason they were still selling preowned ones at £179… and somebody BOUGHT ONE while I was in the shop!). Anyway I got a 3DS, plus Zelda and Rayman 3D for £165. ^_^

You bet I’m happy with that. What I’m not happy with is dropping another £20 on a protective case and screen protectors because the thing fucking scratches itself. Way to go Nintendo. (TBF to them though, this is the first issue I’ve ever had with a Nintendo product as opposed to Microsoft – my first 360 crapped out on me and they claimed that because my shiny warranty sticker was messed up that meant I had tampered with it – like fuck I had. I’d never so much as removed the face plate so clearly I had a dodgy 360 from day one. No wonder it kept freezing on Lost Odyssey ¬¬).

Sometimes I wonder whether Microsoft boasts such huge sales on the 360 because people have bought 2 or 3 of the damn things after their original either bricked or RROD’d. But I digress…

Getting Zelda for the 3DS is a no brainer though and the ads do NOT do the visuals justice. It’s such a bright and colourful game, has been completely remastered and is the same wonderful experience that I originally had on the N64. It’s just a pity that Nintendo got greedy and priced a lot of people out of being able to own one for the forseeable future.

But yes. That is why I haven’t been simming. I’ve got to save the princess!

Sony <3

Ahh Sony. I could never stay mad at you even if you DID allow my credit card to be compromised. The fact that you are offering us a selection of full games for absolutely nothing just further increases my love for you. That being said I already have Infamous and I have absolutely no interest in Little Big Planet or Dead Nation. Maybe I’ll get Ratchet and Clank to see what all the fuss is about.

In other news. YAY! Now I can explore what the Portal 2 online stuff is all about since apparently the experience is better on PS3 than on 360. Gotta’ love Valve… and the Companion Cube 😉

Uncharted 3

Posted: April 17, 2011 in Uncharted, Video Games

Damn; I just can’t get enough of all these previews at the moment. The original Uncharted made me want to rip my hair out with the unfair ratio between bullets available, bullets you had to sink into your enemy and bullets they could sink into you without you dying. Uncharted 2 fixed a lot of what I thought was wrong with the original and I love it – Nathan Drake is one of my all time favourite video game characters.

I’m also particularly eager to find out just what the hell Nate did this time to wind up in the situation that he’s in now. I mean really I thought it couldn’t get any worse than hanging off the edge of a cliff in a train in the middle of a snowstorm whilst heavily injured… but clearly I was wrong.

Ugh I wish this was out before November 2011 ¬¬
